SJB warns errant public officials to obey law

SJB Colombo District MP S.M. Marikkar, on Friday, in Parliament, warned government officials not to be baited by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and fall for the latter’s deceptive ways.

Marikkar said that the government had got its MPs to claim that there were no funds for elections. The public officials had to have the interests of the people at heart, the MP said. Treasury Secretary Mahinda Siriwardana must be prepared to a jail term for his actions under a future SJB government, Marikkar said, adding that Wickremesinghe was known to deceive people.

“He has deceived us many times, as well,” he said, referring to his time with the UNP, led by Wickremesinghe.

“We ask government officials not to be deceived by him. Do not fall into trouble,” he warned.

Markkar highlighted the recent Supreme Court decision in a fundamental rights petition against former President Maithripala Sirisena over the Easter Sunday attack, and asked the officials to bear that decision in mind at all times.

“We tell Siriwardana, the Government Printer and the IGP that Ranil Wickremesinghe will no longer be President next year. Therefore, under a new government, be prepared to face prison terms for contempt of court and violating the Constitution,” he said.
