Calling itself Sri Lanka’s “first ever green political party,” the Samagi Jana Balavegaya under the signature of Sajith Premadasa last week released a National Green Initiative setting out its vision for the country’s environmental sector.

The seven-page document expressed the vision of mainstreaming environmental sustainability into the National Development Agenda saying environmental conservation will be mainstreamed across all sectors as a pre-condition for achieving sustainable development.

The core principles listed are: Environmental Vision (Wisdom), Sustainability, Political Leadership and Participatory Conservation with four pillars of “paramount importance.” They have been identified as environmental sustainability, community participation in conservation, economic benefits from environmental sustainability and political leadership in mainstreaming environmental sustainability into the National Development Agenda.
