The SJB was opposed to President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s move to appoint a parliamentary select committee (PSC) to ascertain whether the Constitutional Council (CC) was an institution under the Executive, Chief Opposition Whip and Kandy District MP Lakshman Kiriella told Parliament on Saturday.

Kiriella said that President Wickremesinghe had in the House the previous day proposed the appointment of a PSC to find out whether the CC was under the executive branch of the government. “Whether the CC is a part of the legislature or it is a part of the executive is a different issue. The most important matter is that the CC should be independent. The Speaker is the Chairman of the CC. Appointing a PSC on CC is an undue influence on the CC. We register our opposition to this proposal,” Kiriella said.
