The SJB has called upon the government, which has received grants from UNESCO for the preservation of Kandy City world heritage site, to reveal whether any funds were granted to the owners of such properties.

As per the latest Addendum to the Order Book of Parliament, Kandy District SJB MP M Velu Kumar has raised a question for Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs to inform the House of the total amount of financial grants received annually by the government from the UNESCO to protect the sacred places and buildings situated within the limits of the World Heritage site city.

The government is asked whether it has taken any measure to share a portion of those funds with the private property and building owners, if so, the amount of the financial aid.

The MP has also asked the government to inform the House whether the sacred places and buildings within the world heritage site city would remain the same in view of the activities of projects that have been recently granted approval for renovation.

He has also requested the government to give the House a list of any programmes it had been able to implement to keep Kandy City as a world heritage site.
