SI to face consequences for fatally shooting a driver without adhering to rules of conduct
Police are probing an incident at Narammala that caused unrest after a 41-year-old man was fatally shot by a police Sub-Inspector.Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said a police team is already on-site conducting an inquiry.
Initial findings reveal the particular Sub-Inspector, responsible for the fatal shooting, had not adhered to proper procedures while carrying out his duties. He was in civvies when he discharged the weapon, SSP Thalduwa said.
The police spokesman said the Sub-Inspector will face department disciplinary action and legal consequences.The Public Security Ministry said they are committed to supporting the victim’s family.
A tense situation arose at Narammala on Thursday (18) night when a lorry driver was killed by the policeman.Earlier, the police had signalled the lorry to stop but the driver had allegedly defied the order.
Police said the Sub-Inspector and a Constable pursued the lorry and pulled it over for a spot inspection. The Sub-Inspector’s firearm was discharged after the lorry stopped.
The driver was admitted to the Narammala Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.Both the Sub-Inspector and the Constable involved in the incident have been arrested.
