Shop owner shot dead

A 50-year-old textile shop owner was shot dead at Dickson Road in Galle on Saturday. The victim was identified as Lalith Wasantha Mendis, a relative of State Minister DV Chanaka, according to the police.

A T-56 assault rifle had been used for the killing, police said, adding that preliminary investigations had revealed that two persons, who came on a motorcycle, opened fire at the businessman’s car and sped away.  Police said the victim

had suffered gunshot wounds, adding that, Mendis had been driving the car at the time of the attack. The Galle police said the motive for the killing had not been established yet.
