Shenal, Desandi, Sethumsa win silver medals
Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2022
Vinuda Shenal Gunathilake of Royal College, Desandi Dhihansa Gamage of Sirimavo Bandaranayake Balika Vidyalaya and young Hasadi Sethumsa of Sujatha Vidyalaya, Matara won silver medals in the Under 16 Girls, Under 14 Open and Under 8 Girls events of the Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2022 conducted in the Maldives.
Desandhi scored five points out in seven games, while Vinuda tied for the top spot and claimed the silver on the tie breaking points. Hasadi had a score of 5 ½ points after seven games in the Under 8 Girls category.
Susal de Silva of Nalanda College, Dinuwara Seneviratne of Maliyadeva College and Dulinma Rathnayake of Viharamahadevi Balika, Kiribathgoda won bronze medals in the Under 18 Open, Under 16 Open and Under 12 Girls respectively. Susal scored five points in seven games, while Seneviratne scored 4 ½ points. Dulinma had a score of five points to earn the third place.
The Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2022 was organized by the Maldivian Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE. The rapid event took place on June 16 at Ukulhas, Maldives. The event was played with the time control of 10 minutes and 10 seconds on the Swiss System in seven rounds.
The West Asian Chess Championships 2022 was scheduled to start on June 17 at the same venue, the Convention Center of Ukulhas, Maldives. A total of 22 players are taking part in this event which will conclude on June 22.
