Shashi granted bail

Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe yesterday granted bail to Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa.

Shashi Weerawansa was released on Rs. 50,000 cash bail with two sureties of Rs.5 million each. The Court also issued an order preventing the accused from leaving the country.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on 27 May imposed a sentence of two-year-rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa after she was found guilty of having fraudulently obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

 Subsequently, Shashi Weerawansa filed an appeal in the Colombo High Court through the Magistrate’s Court registrar challenging the judgment of the MC.
