The national selection panel headed by former fast bowler Pramodaya Wickremesinghe has become the first casualty of Sri Lanka’s disastrous World Cup campaign.

Former opening batsman Upul Tharanga is tipped to become the new Chairman and Sri Lanka Cricket has been informed to submit ten more names out of which the new selection panel will be picked.

Tharanga, who had a stint as Sri Lanka’s white ball captain last represented Sri Lanka in 2019. However, the 38-year-old was very much active as a First Class cricketer and played his last game for NCC two weeks ago.

Despite, several embarrassing losses and Sri Lanka failing to qualify for the Champions Trophy, none holding key positions within the cricket set up had stepped down forcing Sports Minister Harin Fernando to name a new Chief Selector. Tharanga known as a laid back individual has been backed by many for the post of Chief Selector with his predecessor having little interactions about selection policies.
