The Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation (LAF) which leads the campaign on behalf of persons affected by Dementia will host their annual Scrabble competition once again on Saturday, February 25, LAF announced.

“Scrabble is one of the many games that can help stimulate brain activity. It is an ideal game to get the brain cells ticking as it requires players to constantly come up with new words and strategically place them on the board to get high scores. Studies have shown that decades of playing intensive Scrabble has positive effects on cognitive abilities,” an LAF news release on the event said.

The tournament will be organized by Mrs. Shaila Amalean, a former National Player, and her team. The tournament this year is for all, both young and old, with a passion for the game. School goers too are welcome to join and play with seniors to gain competitive experience. Those who have participated over the years will endorse that a fun day is guaranteed, it added.

Call the Lanka Alzheimer’s office on 2667080, 2667082 or 2667084 to register. Trophies and prizes will be awarded. The entry fee is Rs.2,500 per participant and Rs.10,000 for a team of four players. Sponsorships are welcomed to enable us to waive the entry fees for participants, as we do not want finances to come in the way of participation, the organizers said.

All participants will be provided refreshments, tea and lunch on a complimentary basis. Please bring your own scrabble board. Registration starts at 9 am. Participants are requested to be on time at the Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation located at 110, Ketawalamulla Lane, Colombo 10.
