SC okays draft amendment to decriminalise homosexuality

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed Parliament yesterday that the Supreme Court had observed that the amendment to the Penal Code to decriminalize homosexuality was not inconsistent with the Constitution.

“The Supreme Court is of the opinion that the Bill, as a whole or as any provision thereof, is not inconsistent with the Constitution,” the Speaker said.

The Supreme Court’s determination was issued following a petition filed challenging the Bill.
