Sarath, Sabry work together to remove legal impediments to fight against social evils
The Ministries of Justice and Public Security have jointly launched a programme to formulate new laws and amend the existing ones, enabling the law enforcement officers to deal more efficiently with anti-social activities, especially the drug menace.
During a special meeting at the Ministry of Justice recently, it was highlighted that the existing laws were not adequate to deal with new synthetic drugs such as crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ICE.
Seven key issues were taken up for discussion at the meeting chaired by the Minister of Justice Ali Sabry and Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral (Retd.) Sarath Weerasekara.
Special attention was paid to the formulation of laws required to destroy stocks of narcotics seized during raids after samples thereof were taken for legal and judicial purposes.
The meeting also focused on enhancing the rewards for the police officers involved in drug raids, streamlining phone SIM registration, enacting new property laws, strengthening the Money Laundering Act.
Secretary to the Ministry of Justice M. M. P. K. Mayadunne, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Major General Jagath Alwis, IGP Chandana Wickramaratne and Senior DIG Ajith Rohana were also present.
