Spinner Thareen Sanketh staked a claim to the best bowling analysis of the tournament, with a seven-wicket haul which included four wickets in four balls as De Mazenod registered their second consecutive victory of the Inter-School Under 17 Division I cricket tournament yesterday.

In reply to De Mazenod’s 227 runs, Ananda Sastralaya were 55 for one wicket when Sanketh triggered a collapse, grabbing four wickets in consecutive balls in the 15th over. When Sanketh’s over ended the entire top order batting lineup had rattled. Later he took three wickets to complete the rout and a seven-wicket haul.

Except for Udara Sachin who made 35, all others failed to reach double figures as Ananda Sastralaya were dismissed for 96 runs. His bowling figures read 9.3-2-28-7.

It was a remarkable achievement for the former Under 13 captain of De Mazenod. The team were playing Under 17 cricket after missing the entire Under 15 age category due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Incidentally, Sanketh’s team is coached by his father Prasanna Viswanath.

Sanketh had a successful season as an Under 13 player in the 2019 season where he scored 566 runs in 14 innings and took 30 wickets.

Ananda amass 406 runs

In another match played in Kotte, Ananda amassed over 400 runs against President’s College with Viduna Wijebandara (63), Induwara Wijerathna (49), Sachin Jayasinghe (87) and Thedas de Silva (63) scoring quickfire knocks. Isuru Ayesh then picked up five wickets to rattle the home team for 90 runs.

Chamath, Ashan score centuries for Wesley

Chamath Gomez (113) and Ashan Sudarshana (103) scored centuries to hog the limelight as Wesley posted 341 runs against St. John’s College, Nugegoda. St. John’s were dismissed for 177 runs.

In other matches played yesterday, Taxila beat Piliyandala Central by 27 runs, Sri Sumangala College, Panadura beat St. Joseph’s College, Wattala and St. Anthony’s College, Wattala beat Galahitiyawa Central by 78 runs.
