The current pandemic should not be used as an excuse to delay the formulation of a new constitution, TNA leader, R. Sampanthan said on Saturday (21) addressing the media.

“COVID-19 is a temporary situation and a new constitution is more important. We have written to the President and the Prime Minister asking for a quick meeting about this. We want to discuss this in-depth,” Sampanthan said.

The TNA leader said that successive governments had promised to solve the issues, faced by the Tamil people through constitutional amendments, since 1989. “Successive governments have promised to address the problems of the Tamils, especially when it comes to the North and the East. However, nothing has happened for 32 years,” he said.

He said that all other amendments to the 1978 constitution had been fully implemented apart from the 13th amendment.

“The pandemic looks bad now. However, this issue will be solved soon. So, we must not make this an obstacle to a political settlement. I again urge the President and the Prime Minister to grant us an appointment to discuss the matter as soon as possible,” he said.
