Salamuthu, Theminda set to vie for gold and silver in 400 metres

Sprinters Salamuthu Jayathilaka and Theminda Rajapaksa provided Sri Lanka a winning start to the Asian Youth Athletics Championships in Kuwait on Thursday as they produced the fastest times in their respective heats to qualify for the boys’ 400 metres finals.

Thurstan College sprinter Jayathilaka clocked 48.84 seconds to win his heat ahead of Seyed Mohamed Sajjad who was the only other sprinter to manage sub 50 seconds. Ruslan Litovskii of Kazakhstan and Pongsapat Appamate of Thailand finished third and fourth respectively.

In the other heat Sir John Kothalawala College, Kurunegala sprinter Theminda Rajapaksa returned a time of 49.58 seconds to win. He beat Kuwait’s Ahmad Alanzi to the second place. Nikita Petyakhin of Kazakhstan and Sarzil Hasan of Bangladesh were the others to qualify for the finals from that heat.

The two Sri Lankans will now vie for medals as the fastest from the heats when they compete in the final today. Meanwhile, Nannapurawa MV Bibila athlete Madushani Herath was set to compete in the girls’ long jump in the afternoon yesterday.
