President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was incapable of leading the nation and had admitted that during his most recent address to the nation, Opposition Leader, Sajith Premadasa said on Thursday in Devinuwara.

“Addressing the nation, the President said that the current crisis, the nation is facing, is not his doing. He said that people had urged him to come into power. It’s as if he were inconvenienced by becoming the President of the country,” Premadasa said,

He added that the Rajapaksa administration mismanaged the economy from the beginning. Soon after coming into power, the President gave a mammoth tax concession for the rich and lost between 600 to 800 billion rupees in income.

“He was elected to power by the poor people who wanted a better life. He has been serving the interests of the super-rich from day one. The elites have benefitted from everything he has done in the last two and a half years at the expense of ordinary people,” he said.

The Opposition Leader said that despite the chaos and suffering unleashed, the President was remorseless. He was trying to mislead the people again, by lying about the international situation, Premadasa said.

“One of the common utterances by the President and his lackeys is that everyone is doing badly because of COVID. They claim the foreign reserves of everyone has dropped. This is not true, let’s forget about China and India, but even Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia, which are comparable to us, have done well during COVID. The problem is not COVID or the crisis in Ukraine, it’s the inability of the government,” he said.
