Sabry and Rajapakse to study Truth and Reconciliation mechanism in SA
Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry is visiting South Africa from 21 to 25 March 2023 at the invitation of Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa Dr. Naledi Pandoor. Minister Sabry is accompanied by Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakse.
The Foreign Ministry said: “This visit is in line with Sri Lanka’s stated policy, including at international fora, that it remains committed to addressing reconciliation through domestic mechanisms. In this context, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the concept of a Truth and Reconciliation mechanism as proposed by the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Reconciliation, which is chaired by the President. The Cabinet also authorised the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Justice to operationalise this concept and to initiate discussions and facilitate the drafting of a Truth and Reconciliation law.
In support of this process, the South African Government invited the Foreign Minister to visit South Africa to obtain insights with regard to the South African experience in the establishment of their Truth-seeking Commission.”
