Former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Russell Hamer (76) has passed away. A product of Wesley College, he represented Nomads and SSC. He played several unofficial Tests for Sri Lanka. After retirement, he coached cricket and functioned as the curator of SSC in the 1990s.

Hamer once took the board to courts after being overlooked by the selectors. His lawyer was popular leftist leader Colvin R. de Silva. The President of the Cricket Board at that time was another leftist leader; Dr. N. M. Perera.

His remains are at A. F. Raymond’s, Borella. The funeral will be on Friday evening at General cemetery, Kanatte.
