Rs 1.3 bn surety bail imposed on tax defaulting liquor company accountant

Colombo Additional Magistrate Bandara Illangasinghe imposed a surety of Rs 1,350 million to enlarge on bail the accountant of Randenigala Distilleries liquor Company of Kaduwela last Monday.

The bail was set when a case of tax evading by the liquor company was taken up for hearing on Monday. The judge set the bail on the accountant by the name of N.W.A. Samantha Roshan for a sum equal to the tax due by the company to the government coffers.

The case has been filed against the liquor company for not paying income tax, VAT and NBT amounting to Rs 1,358,773,144.00 during the period from 2012 to 2015.

The counsel for the liquor company informed the court that they had filed a writ application before the Court of Appeal pertaining to paying the taxes.The date for the next hearing was fixed for May 28.
