Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake said in a statement that at this crucial juncture in the country, all members of the Opposition should unite as one despite their differences and commit themselves to the motherland and the people.

A solution to the political and economic crisis faced by the country can only be found through a united opposition, the Mayor said.

Members of the opposition need to decide whether all of them join hands for a consensus and move forward with a strong approach or flee in fear, she said.

Instead of playing the role of the opposition, they should decide whether to continue working within their own political camp, she said.

The leaders of the UNP and SJB should keep in mind that they are not two parties but a political force composed of brothers and sisters separated from the same family.

“At a time when opportunistic and short-sighted politicians have plunged not only the present but also the unborn future generations of the country into a tragic situation, the Opposition must fulfill its unwavering responsibility.”

“It is up to the Opposition to decide whether to allow the people who have appointed you as their representatives starve to death or to make a collective commitment to them,” the Mayor said.

She said that Sri Lanka will not be able to avoid further suffering due to the forthcoming $ 7 billion debt payment.
