Roads and pavements needing urgent repairs

Published

Many roads and pavements in the city of Colombo are in a very bad state of disrepair that motorists and pedestrians are terribly inconvenienced. I would like to make specific mention of a few roads that I am familiar with in and around the locality where I reside. The first of these that I would like to bring to the notice of the mayor and the officials concerned(so that they may rise from their slumber) is the road where Havelock Road (excuse my not using the jaw breaking new name) bifurcates into Maya Mawatha and the continuation of Havelock Road.

Both the road surface and the pavement of Maya Mawatha are in such a state of disrepair that it is not safe for pedestrians to walk on the pavement or even on the road. This is especially so for elderly persons. Many people walk on the road with some trepidation that they might have a fall and end up in hospital.

The other roads in the same vicinity that need urgent repairs are the Suvisuddharama Road and its continuation to Perakumba Place. In the recent past a lot of digging has taken place on these roads to lay large sewerage pipes and these two roads have not been repaired properly. This digging and patching had taken more than five years. Suvisuddharama Road is broad enough to accommodate a pavement at least on one side of the road so that pedestrians could walk without hindrance.

The mayor should reduce the money spent on refreshments at meetings of the Council which usually serves no purpose and utilize this money to repair the roads and pavements. This is an absolute necessity as most of the people attend to their day-to-day work by walking as they cannot afford to even travel by bus. They just cannot think of traveling in limousines which luxury is available to the mayor and that too at the expense of rate payers.
