Rising cost of living and hapless common man

Another new year has dawned and the people of Sri Lanka have to face untold hardships due to the ever-increasing cost of living. The government’s decision to increase VAT (Value Added Tax) resulting in people falling from the frying pan into the fire.

However, some traders try to fish in troubled waters and they jack up the prices according to their whims and fancies.

A large number of people have left the country seeking greener pastures. Thousands of people can be seen in passports queues. Some other people try to earn something to eke out a living. The hapless common man has to grin and bear the situation. The sad fact is that the authorities concerned do not give a tinker’s cuss about the prevailing situation of the poor masses. It is high time to take necessary measures to remedy the situation for the benefit of the poor people of our country.
