‘Right To Read’ project: Bid to improve English knowledge among Southern student population
Education Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris recently discussed proposed moves to provide smart classrooms to 200 schools in Matara and Galle districts in the Southern Province under the ‘Right To Read’ project.
Prof. Peiris chaired the meeting at ‘Dakshinapaya’ Labuduwa, Galle, where the pivotal importance of providing smart classrooms meant to improve English knowledge among the student community was discussed. Among those present were Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, State Minister Mohan de Silva, and MPs Sampath Atukorale and Isuru Dodangda, Education Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera and top businessman Azad Omar, who spearheaded the project.
Prof. Peiris, in his brief address explained how the ‘Right To Read’ project could be of decisive help to the student community and strengthen the incumbent government’s efforts to provide equal rights. According to the Education Ministry, altogether 852 schools (over 500,000 students) were beneficiaries of the project.
