Richmond have the edge as Nirmal shines on day one

Richmond had the edge over arch rivals Mahinda as they restricted the latter to 68 for five wickets in reply to their 174 runs on day one of the 117th Lovers’ Quarrel Big Match at Galle International Stadium on Sunday.

Nalaka Jayawardena and Sharon Abhishek took two wickets each to give Richmond the upper hand at stumps as Mahinda lost three wickets for the addition of just four runs within the last five overs of day one.

Dinura Kalupahana was waging a lone battle for Mahinda and was unbeaten on 25 runs after having faced 70 balls.

For Richmond, Tharinda Nirmal played the key role in the batting department as he top scored with 68 runs after they were put into bat in the morning. He saw two wickets fall for 33 runs before adding a vital 55 runs stand for the third wicket with Bhanuka Manohara who was the next highest scorer with 34 runs.

Nirmal scored eight fours and faced 135 balls for his knock. Richmond were 131 for five wickets when Nirmal departed in the 45th over and the last five batsmen added 43 runs.

Paceman Shehan Hasaranga who took three wickets was the pick of the bowlers for Mahinda.
