Reunion after 53 years

The band Friday On My Mind was formed by an enthusiastic group of schoolboys, in 1970, with Christo Fernando (drums), Derrick Walles (rhythm and vocals), Brian Perera (bass and vocals), Jayantha Jayawardene (lead) and Rohan Fernando (vocals).

Drummer Christo says his late father, Dr. Leo Fernando, was a great lover of music and that he was very supportive of the band and ensured that they were given all the encouragement to do well, as a band.

“He also provided us with sound and musical instruments for rehearsals’, added Christo.

Friday On My Mind performed at many resort hotels, down South, over the years, and, in 1974, the band signed a year’s contract to perform at ‘Xanadu’, a very popular night club, in Colombo 3.

Charmaine Jansen, who sang a wide repertoire of songs, joined the band, at this stage, as their female vocalist, while Derrick Walles, Brian Perera and Rohan Fernando shared the vocals.

Derrick, Brian and Rohan, subsequently, migrated.

According to Christo, all the members of Friday On My Mind are getting together to enact memories of their teenage days…53 years later.
