Retired SDIG calls for reforms in trouble-torn service
Retired Senior DIG Merril Gunaratne has made a series of proposals as part of overall efforts to reform the police. Gunaratne, in his recently launched ‘Perils of a Profession’ explained the urgently needed reforms. Public Security Minister Retired Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera recently vowed to introduce much required changes. Minister Weerasekera recently held discussions with the police top brass in this regard. Among the proposals made by Gunaratne was the call to end direct entrants to the rank of ASP. Gunaratne, himself a beneficiary of the controversial scheme, feels the practice of recruiting both men and women to the rank of ASP should be terminated.
