Desmond – a legend, indeed

Ivan Corea (England):

I’m still in shock over Desmond’s death. He telephoned me from Sydney, several times before Christmas, and texted me, as well. He sent me a special video message for the deaf and blind children of 16 schools, in Sri Lanka, and a British charity Deaf and Blind Aid Lanka, based in London, who were raising money for them through a forthcoming baila zoom concert, in March. His message to these children was so wonderful and uplifting. He had a heart for the vulnerable, and the poor. He was known as the “King of Baila.” An absolute legend and one of Sri Lanka’s great musicians, Desmond is a relative. I will miss him. May his soul rest in peace.

Michael Jayaweera (Germany):

He was a great singer, entertainer and personality. His baila renditions were legendary, especially at College Reunions and expats dances, around the world (England, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, the USA, Canada, etc.) There was a lot of sarong and saree involved when he “lashed out” hits like ‘Nurse Nona’ and ‘Kussi Amma Sera.’ However, my favourite was his version of Neil Diamond’s ‘Crackling Rose,’ which got me into trouble and arguments with friends, since I claimed that Desmond’s version was better. Thank you for the good times Des. Rest in peace!

Randy Jansz (Australia):

I have seen Desmond perform at dinner dances, in Melbourne. Absolutely beautiful, brilliant, fantastic, fabulous, superb! An outstanding entertainer – simply the best! May his beautiful soul rest in eternal peace and Perpetual light shine upon him.
