Record arrests on Vesak Poya Day

Police had arrested about 587 persons on Vesak Poya Day (26) for violating the quarantine laws, DIG Ajith Rohana said.

The Police spokesman said the highest number of persons 155 had been arrested from Matale.

As at yesterday, the total number of persons nabbed for the past seven months was 14,766, the DIG said.

The DIG said that a special police operation to check trishaws had got underway in the Western Province on Wednesday. During that operation, the police had checked 3,397 three wheelers and taken into custody 25 of them for being on roads without a valid reason in violation of the health regulations. About 30 persons who travelled in those trishaws had also been taken into custody and all would be produced before courts, DIG Rohana said.
