Rare marine spectacle close to Kalpitiya beach, but nature lovers driven away by corona fear

More than 1,500 dolphins, nearly 40 sperm whales, three blue whales and few Hump back whales had been spotted yesterday off Kalpitiya, a senior official of the Department of Wildlife said.

Wildlife Department Spokesperson Hasini Sarathchandra told The Island that they were usually sighted between September and April.  “We are witnessing the new trend since March this year.

She said that species were sighted in close proximity to the beach and called it a very rare occurrence.

Department’s Senior Site Conservation Officer Manjula Kumara Moratenna said that many giant whales had arrived in the Kalpitiya sea.
