President Ranil Wickremesinghe said over 10 acres from the Mahamodara hospital could be utilised to develop tourist infrastructure.

Addressing a meeting in Galle on Wednesday (13) evening, Wickremesinghe said all government institutions would be removed from the Galle Fort and hotels and restaurants established in those buildings with historical value.

“So many tourists are coming. We need to find them rooms. If you are living in Galle, and if you have a house, rent the house to foreigners

and go live somewhere else,” he said.

Wickremesinghe said Galle was the hub of tourism in the South and the properties of state institutions should be used to develop tourism there.

“The prison, too, should be shifted and tourist infrastructure should be developed,” he said.
