…..Opposition trying to drag country back to crisis: Wajira

UNP Chairman and MP Wajira Abeywardena says that members of the last government had violated the Articles 147, 148, 149, 150 and 151 of the Constitution by announcing this country bankrupt.Addressing the media at party headquarters Siri Kotha in Kotte on Thursday, Abeywardena said: “Only Ranil Wickremesinghe, then he was the sole UNP MP in parliament, opposed declaring the country bankrupt. There was none to support him in parliament. You can check the Hansard report on proceedings of April 08, this year (to find out what he said).”

He added that following the month long languishing of people in queues for fuel, milk powder, gas and kerosene and the collapse of agriculture owing to the fertilizer shortage, the former government declared to the world that Sri Lanka is a bankrupt country.

“Soon after that public protests forced the former government out of office. Government members went in to hiding and sent their children abroad. The country was in turmoil when UNP leader Wickremesinghe was given the reins. Ruling party members only wanted a place to hide. They did not demand an election then. The country was in anarchy.

“Our leader had a clear understanding of the crisis and correctly assessed the damage inflicted on the economy and society. He took the bull by the horns. He is the only leader with the vision to save this nation from the danger facing all of us. He knows what has to be done to take a turn for the better.

“Within weeks he solved the queue problem. There are no shortages of milk powder, petrol, kerosene and gas now. As the situation is turning better, the opposition plans to drag it back into crisis,” Abeywardena charged.
