UNP Leader and MP Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday urged Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and Leader of the House, Dinesh Gunawardena to hold an adjournment debate following the resumption of Parliament on 18 Jan.

Given below is the text of the letter Wickremesinghe has sent to the Speaker: “I have written to the Leader of the House requesting his agreement to an Adjournment Debate, following the address to Parliament under Article 33(A) of the Constitution by His Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka. This is a practice we have followed since the 1978 Constitution came into force.

The Parliamentary Business Committee stands dissolved subsequent to the Prorogation of Parliament. Therefore, I am requesting you Mr. Speaker, after consulting the Party Leaders to allocate 19th, 20th and if necessary 21th January 2022 for this Adjournment Debate. Attached is a copy of the letter sent by me to the Leader of the House.”
