June 11 will be the first death anniversary of Rajeewa Prakash Jayaweera. His death under such sensational and tragic circumstances was the subject of much discussion and speculation in Colombo circles for quite some time.

Rajeewa, to people who did not know him, from a distance would reflect an aloofness bordering on arrogance but if he got into a conversation with those very same people, they would soon change their minds and realize he was no respecter of persons. He had a close circle of friends, though, with whom he could “let himself go”.

He was widely traveled from his childhood days initially with his father being a career diplomat and then on his own steam as a professional in the travel and hospitality industries. With this professional background he had many friends who like him were connoisseurs of food and wine. This was most evident when he entertained. Besides enjoying the good things in life there was another side to him that many may not be aware of. Rajeewa was a good friend and a man for all seasons. While he enjoyed with his friends during the good times, if the chips were down for any of them, he was always there without being asked, doing what he thought best, to alleviate the situation.

Among the other sterling qualities Rajeewa possessed were his uprightness and integrity. So much so that when he returned from an overseas stint and was given a lift to work, till he got his own car, he was adamant in not letting his friend drop him at his office as he considered this, misuse of the vehicle for a purpose it was not intended for. He insisted, instead, on getting off at his friend’s office and finding his own way to his destination.

Another incident that comes to mind was when he was representing his Airline at a 31st night dance, I believe, where an air ticket to Australia was donated as a prize, he was called upon to make the draw. Lo and behold the ticket he drew was that of his sister. Though the organizers had no issue with it, he immediately announced that as he had drawn the ticket of his sister, he would draw again and some other lucky person won a ticket to Australia and back. These are typical examples of his qualities which he no doubt acquired from his parents.

Rajeewa took the course of action he believed was best for him and his loved ones. One hopes he has attained the peace he was looking for.
