SJB mayoral candidate for Colombo Mujibur Rahuman, on Sunday, accused the President’s Media Division (PMD) of spreading misinformation by planting news items relating to the Election Commission (EC), and the upcoming local government polls.

Addressing the media at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo, Rahuman said that the government was threatening the members of the EC in order to delay the elections.

He said that while the resignation letter of EC member P. S. M. Charles had been publicized on Jan 25, the PMD now claimed the President had not accepted it yet.

“In other words, the President received the letter only after four days. The PMD pretends that the President is against her decision to step down,” he said.

Rahuman accused the PMD of disseminating a rumour that EC Chairman Nimal Punchihewa is set to resign.

“The PMD is carrying out a viscious campaign to delay the elections. We know who runs it. They are just a group of boys known for planting news stories. They have no media experience. Ranil Wickremesinghe is attempting to manipulate the media, through this group,” he said.
