Priya gone at 68

Although she was ailing for quite a while, Priya Goonetilleke’s death has come as a shock to many.

According to Drucille Gomes, Priya died peacefully, at home, on Tuesday, 31th October.

Drucille also mentioned that due to various complications, connected with Priya’s health, only 18 percent of her heart was functioning.

She also had both her legs amputated as a result of diabetes.

Priya was a known drummer, in the scene here, and her initial band was the all-girl group, the Planets, then came Pearl, and finally Kissmet.

During the latter stages of her career, before falling ill, she also freelanced and compered dances, as well…doing a 31st night scene, at the Galadari Hotel, as compere.

The last time I saw Priya in action was at the Lobby of the Galadari Hotel, and that was years ago.

At the time of her death, Priya was 68 years old, and her funeral took place last Saturday, 04th November, at the Borella Kanatte Cemetery.

The day before her funeral, her musician friends gathered at the funeral parlor and paid tribute to her in song.

Tributes continue to pour in for Priya, on social media, with Drucille Gomes, her dearest friend and companion, having this to say…

“God knew you were tired and carried you to heaven. Life will never be the same without you.

“You were the wind beneath my wings. I am gutted.

“We were family, not just friends, and we will carry you in spirit, until we meet up once again”.
