President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday (18) told youth political activists, affiliated to his party in Nuwara Eliya, that he was willing to convert the historical post office at Nuwara Eliya into a tourist hotel if that is what the people desire.

The meeting took place at the President’s House in Nuwara Eliya.

“We would like to develop tourism. Do you also like to see that?” he asked the young UNPers.

Wickremesinghe said he wanted to take over the colonial era post office at Nuwara Eliya and the surrounding land and bring the Taj Group of hotels to the area.

“However, people opposed this. Then Taj Group said they will not come to Nuwara Eliya if people are

opposed to it. However, if people of Nuwara Eliya want to convert the historical post office at Nuwara Eliya into a tourist hotel, I can still facilitate it,” he said.

Wickremesinghe said if the Taj hotels come to Nuwara Eliya several other international hotel chains will follow.

“How many people use the post office at Nuwara Eliya? People in Galle ask me to demolish their colonial post office and build a few hotels there.”
