President appoints new Chairperson, Members to Human Rights Commission

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Jagath Balasuriya as Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, with Dr. M. H. Nimal Karunasiri, Dr. Vijitha Nanayakkara, Ms. Anusuya Shanmuganathan and H. K. Navaratne Weraduwa as Members.

The appointments were made by the President under Article 41A of the Constitution of Sri Lanka (together with Sections 3 of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Act No 21 of 1996) on December 10, 2020.

Balasuriya, who was appointed Chairman, was the Minister of National Heritage in the previous Mahinda Rajapaksa government. He served as the acting Governor of the Central Province earlier.
