Poultry and egg prices expected to drop – Minister of Agriculture
Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera, speaking at Thursday’s (14) Presidential Media Centre (PMC) news conference under the theme ‘Collective Path to a Stable Country’ said that egg and chicken prices are likely to decrease next year and that there will be no need for egg imports from next year.
The Minister said that the present daily egg requirement was 7 million eggs and that recent data showed that approximately 6 million eggs are being supplied daily, leaving a current shortage of around 1 million eggs per day and it is anticipated that this deficit can be addressed over the next three months.
The minister mentioned that the per capita chicken meat consumption prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis was 11 kg per year.
