More than 27,000 postal workers were on strike demanding a 20,000-rupee salary increment and against the decision by the government to sell archaeologically important post offices, the Joint Convener of the Joint Postal Trade Union Collective, Chinthaka Bandara said yesterday (11).

The union action commenced at 4 pm on Sunday (10) and will go on for 48 hours, he said.

“Around 27,000 workers in 653 post offices and 3410 sub post offices, did not report for duty. We are mainly opposed to selling several post offices with historical value. There are also many issues in the Department. The government and management is responsible for any losses incurred due to the strike,” he said.
