About 100 to 150 new cases of heart diseases are reported daily in Sri Lanka and most of them are young people, a medical expert has said.Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Gotabaya Ranasinghe said that the deteriorating air quality was one of the reasons why more Sri Lankans are developing heart conditions.

“One of the main causes of air pollution is the toxic fumes from vehicles, especially three wheelers. The government needs to bring in laws to prevent air pollution,” he said.Other reasons were unhealthy food and sedentary lifestyles, he said. “Most Sri Lankans eat three meals of rice and consume a lot of oil and sugar,” he said.
