Five persons, including a police sergeant, were taken into custody by the Navy on Sunday while allegedly digging for gold believed to have been buried in Kokkuparayan forest at Seelvathuari in Mannar.

The suspects were handed over to the Mannar police.

The sergeant in custody has divulged that there had been two OICs too were involved in the digging for the buried treasure with them but they had made good their escape.

Silvathurai Police are conducting a separate investigation into the incident. They are planning to question an IP attached to the same police station where the suspect sergeant works.
