Poaching trawler with 14 fishers taken into custody

The Navy on Sunday carried out an operation in northern waters to chase away Indian trawlers poaching in Lankan waters.

One of the trawlers was taken into custody along with 14 fishermen off the Kovilan Lighthouse, Karainagar.

The suspects and the poaching trawler were brought to the Kankesanthurai harbour and handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for legal action.

The Navy has so far this year seized 35 Indian trawlers and taken into custody 240 fishers.
