PM may resign soon– MP

Communist Party Member of Parliament for the Matara District Weerasumana Weerasinghe said yesterday that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa might resign, paving the way for an interim government.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had agreed to the proposals put forward by the 41 dissident MPs, Weerasinghe said, adding that the President had invited the 14 party leaders to a meeting to be held this morning to discuss the formation of an interim government.

He said that demanding the president’s resignation as well at this juncture was not practical.

However, PM Rajapaksa has said he will not resign.
