Plea on behalf of torque monkeys in Sri Lanka

Published

I commend Dr. Nilanthi Senanayake, of the Faculty of Medicine, for her eye-opening remarks, which appeared in The Island of 26 April. In fact, finding popular solutions to every problem has become a style in this world today. While the exact number of the population is not known, sending out only 100,000 torque monkeys will have no meaning at all, according to the learned doctor. Meanwhile, a country, where meat of most animals, is consumed, who can guarantee that these poor creatures will not end up on dining tables?

It is sad that a Buddhist country, that even sought to ban cattle slaughter, is now trying to export monkeys.
