EPDP leader and Minister Douglas Devananda yesterday (3) said that Iranaitivu Island was not a suitable place for burying Covid-19 victims.

The Minister has pointed out to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa that the recent decision of the government to bury the bodies of Covid-19 victims in the Iranaitivu Islands area had caused unrest among the people of the Northern Province.

The Minister said the decision at issue would adversely affect not only the lives of the people but also the projects; the government was expected to receive more than US $ 25 million in foreign exchange through the recently launched project on Iranaitivu Sea cucumber Export Village, he added.

Requesting the President and the Prime Minister to consider alternative sites, the Minister expressed confidence that the final decision would be taken by the government in a fair manner to safeguard the interests of the people belonging to all communities.
