It might take decades to solve the issues created by COVID-19 in the education sector, Deputy Director General of Health Services, Dr. Hemantha Herath said yesterday.

Therefore, the general public should do their best to ensure that there would be no more lockdowns, he said.

“Some people might think that the education sector will be able to recover in a few months. They are mistaken. The university system took decades to recover from the fallout of the disruptions due the trouble in the late 1980s.

Dr. Herath urged the public to follow the health guidelines aimed at helping the country to return to normal. “All Sri Lankans are aware of the good health practices such as washing hands, wearing masks, and physical distancing”, he said.

The Deputy Director General of Health Services added that some schools would reopen up on 21 October and that the parents had to ensure that their children followed the health guidelines properly.
