Passport case: Wimal acquitted and discharged
Negombo Magistrate’s Court on Monday (01) acquitted and discharged National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa of charges brought against him by the Immigration and Emigration Department.
Weerawansa was arrested by the Department of Immigration and Emigration on 24 Oct., 2015, during the Yahapalana regime.
The Department detected him carrying an invalid passport with a valid visa and he was asked to come back with a valid passport if he wished to travel on that visa. The following day, when Weerawansa came back with a new passport he also brought the invalid passport as the visa was on it. He was then arrested on the charge of carrying an invalid passport.
