Over 70% of farmers in Polonnaruwa have not deposited money to purchase fertiliser
Over 70 percent of farmers in Polonnaruwa have not deposited money for the purchase of fertiliser from the government, former President Maithripala Sirisena said on Friday (18) in Parliament. He said that he spoke to a number of officials in Polonnaruwa and that they said the government provides fertiliser after farmers deposit money.
“However, 70 percent of farmers in Polonnaruwa have not deposited money.
This is because farmers don’t have any money due to the disastrous past harvest seasons,” he said.Sirisena also said successive governments have done nothing about the human-elephant conflict.
“The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) attempted to establish an all-party government for 18 months. But this was unsuccessful because of the attitude of the government leaders,” he said. (SI)
