A search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy in the Uchchamunai Sea off Kalpitiya on May 30th led to the recovery of over 617kg (wet weight) of Tendu leaves. Having detected a dinghy bringing in the contraband, the Navy took it into custody along with two suspects.

A spokesperson said that the Tendu leaves had been stuffed into 19 sacks. The suspects had been identified as residents of Kalpitiya, aged 21 and 46, and were later handed over to the Excise Special Unit of Northwestern Province for legal action.
