Over 400 wild elephant deaths in 2022

The Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on Environment, Natural Resources and Sustainable Development has disclosed that 433 wild elephants perished in 2022. The disclosure was made in a media release issued by Parliament following a discussion the SOC had with those who prepared a national action plan to mitigate the human-elephant conflict. SJB MP Ajith Mannapperuma chaired the meeting.

Dr. Sumit Pilapitiya, Chair of the committee appointed to facilitate and supervise the implementation of the National Action Plan to reduce human-elephant conflicts, and wildlife scientist Dr. Prithiviraj Fernando presented the plan to the committee.
